irene

hurricane irene. what can we say about hurricane irene? for about a week all we have heard about is hurricane irene, and how she was heading straight for new york city to tear it apart. everyone around us was panicing. the city shut down the subway, ordered mandatory evacuations for some areas, and every grocery/convenience store was jam packed. you couldn't buy a flashlight anywhere in the tri-state area. new yorkers do not know how to handle hurricanes.

we on the other hand, are hurricane pro's. sean's lived through many hurricanes. we met because of a hurricane! hurricanes, can't mess with us. hurricane irene was set to arrive on our one year engaged-aversary. instead of the steak and wine we had enjoyed the year before at dylan prime, this year we were having macaroni and cheese on the couch in our pajamas. thanks, irene, for the anniversary present.

nonetheless, we took all the precautions. we loaded up on water, non-refrigerated foods, gathered candles, a flashlight, and bunkered down in our apartment with loads of movies and activities. hour after hour mayor bloomberg would come on tv and warn of the impending storm. north carolina was getting pounded and this same storm was headed for us. he was predicting mass flooding, power outages, no transportation and high rise buildings were in danger because of the impending high winds. we kept thinking the apartment would go black at any second. so we sat, and waited. we slept. we watched movies. we waited for the sound of wind and rain.

when we woke up sunday mayor bloomberg told us the storm had hit and areas of the city had flooded, were without power, and were still under tornado warnings. what? we had missed it? we looked out our window and it appeared to be sunday morning as usual. huh?

by day's end, most transportation was up and running, stores and restaurants were open, and somewhere, we heard, people were trying to get back to their homes. but, as far as we were concerned, we had a nice quiet weekend huddled in our apartment spending quality time together. thanks, but no thanks, irene. don't come again okay?

lots of love,
stay dry,
kasey + sean
