boston

living in new york city, we keep saying we are going to take weekend trips around the northeast. in 2 years, these trips have never happened. between work, wedding planning, other people's weddings, and just plain wanting a weekend off, we just have never made the time to do it. so finally, we made it to boston! sean had to be in boston for a work trip on a monday, so we decided to go up together friday night on amtrak and spend the weekend. after much research and debate we decided to stay at the liberty hotel. sitting on the water, in the downtown beacon hill neighborhood, this former jail seemed like it would be a real experience! when we came up the escalator into the lobby, we were not expecting such a beautiful room!

we arrived pretty late and headed down to scampo, one of the restaurants in the hotel, for a drink and dinner. we weren't expecting a lot but it was delicious! we woke up early saturday and decided to just go out and see the city. we started walking down charles street, through beacon hill, and about every 2 feet we were stopping and "awwwwww!"ing at something. that neighborhood is straight out of a movie! we stopped and had brunch at the beacon hill hotel and bistro which was just adorable, and of course, so good. we continued our walk through the boston common gardens, saw cheers, and walked down newbury street past a lot of really cute shops and ended up on the esplanade along the charles river on a park bench. we couldn't believe we had seen half the city already, it was so small! we decided to trek on and head over to the north end and dive into history. we wove our way back through beacon hill over through faneouil hall, quincy market, to the old north church, and paul revere's house. along the way we stopped an old italian bakery, mike's pastry, in the north end and shared kasey's very first cannoli. it was amazingly delicious. once we made it back to our hotel we calculated we had walked over 7 miles that day around boston. our feet were exhausted, but we loved it! we had a cozy dinner at a small italian restaurant, toscano, in beacon hill.

on sunday we decided to head over to cambridge, have breakfast in harvard square, and check out harvard. it was really interesting to see where some of the greatest minds in our country have gone to study, but we both agreed it wasn't as impressive as we had imagined it would be.  but nonetheless, it was very interesting and we were glad we went. we wandered around and saw the last few odds and ends we had wanted to see before kasey had to get to her train to get back to the city.

all in all, we loved our weekend in boston! it was such a great (and easy!) getaway for the two of us and was really fun to enjoy what living in new england is all about. we can't wait for our next weekend trip!
